3000 danced in the star city of La La Land
Jazz improvisations excited the fans of the concert projection of the musical in Bulgaria
“Hello friends!” – with these words of spoiled Bulgarian, the conductor Eric Oksner opened the show La La Land In Concert in Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture yesterday. “I’m aware that as fans of the movie, you know the soundtrack probably better than us, so clap, sing, laugh and weep. That would be the real acknowledgment for us, “Oksner called for seconds before the big screen to spin the romantic waltz of Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling). Synchronicity, craved for perfection, fairness and sensuality, sneaked in every tone coming out of the instruments of the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra and the army of outstanding jazz soloists traditionally trusted to improvise. “When we worked with Justin Hurwitz on these melodies, we let the jazz musicians experiment in the studio. Before the La La Land In Concert tour, we asked whether we should record these improvisations on a sheet and they would sound everywhere, or give the same opportunity to the musicians in every country we go into. We preferred the latter, “explained Oxner.
3000 fans of the National Palace of Culture’s production waited tears and danced against the background of the star city, painted by the musicians and recorded voices of Stone and Gosling in the award-winning Oscar, Golden Globe and four Grammy nominations of City Of Stars English – Star City). The rest of the songs, whose live performances lingered the audience in Hall 1, were “Another Day of Sun”, “A Fire”, “A Lovely Night”, “Audition” and others.
Among the challenges the musicians had to deal with was the comparatively short rehearsal period. “La La Land is my most sophisticated production so far. We use a system called “click-track,” which is like a metronome in the ear and clicks. Using the recorded voices of Emma Stone, John Legend and Ryan Gosling and syncing them with music in such a short rehearsal period is a real challenge, “the conductor recently admitted to Monitor. However, success is there – 10 minutes after the last whistle, the applause continued to echo in the hall, and Oxner himself returned to three “bissa” bowing in front of the audience.
